Threading a lace through a hole doesn't look like much, but it's quietly one of the more demanding fine motor tasks a young child attempts — requiring two hands to do two different jobs at once, a skill that takes real practice to build.
Why Lacing Is Harder Than It Looks
Lacing requires bilateral coordination — one hand holding the piece steady while the other threads the lace through, each hand doing a genuinely different job simultaneously. This is a more advanced motor skill than simple grasping, and it directly prepares the hands for later tasks like buttoning clothes, tying shoelaces, and eventually handwriting.
- Bilateral coordination — both hands working together on different tasks
- Fine motor precision — threading a lace accurately through a small hole
- Patience and persistence — lacing often takes several attempts to get right
- Sequencing — following the pattern of over, under, and through in order
How to Support Lacing Practice
- Start with larger holes and stiff laces. If your set has a stiffened lace tip, use that first — it's much easier to thread than a soft, floppy end.
- Demonstrate slowly. Show the threading motion step by step before letting your child attempt it independently.
- Expect it to take time. Lacing is genuinely one of the harder early fine motor skills — frustration is common and normal, not a sign anything is wrong.
- Praise the attempt, not just success. “You got the lace through two holes, that's tricky!” values the effort involved, not just a finished pattern.
Why This Skill Matters for Later Independence
The same bilateral coordination built through lacing directly transfers to real self-care skills — buttoning a shirt, tying shoes, zipping a jacket. Practising with a forgiving, toy version first makes these later daily tasks noticeably easier when the time comes.
Best Age Range
Most children start attempting basic lacing from around age 3, with real proficiency developing through age 4-5 as bilateral coordination matures.
